Preimplantation Genetic Screening

Preimplantation Genetic Screening (PGS) and Preimplantation Genetic Diagnosis (PGD) are advanced techniques used during in vitro fertilization (IVF) to test embryos for genetic abnormalities before implantation.

PGS is a screening technique used to identify numerical chromosomal abnormalities, while PGD is a diagnostic technique used to detect specific genetic diseases.

Sago IVF Team is one of the few advanced IVF clinics in North Cyprus to offer these genetic techniques.

WHAT IS PREIMPLANTATION GENETIC SCREENING (PGS)?

Preimplantation Genetic Screening (PGS) is a laboratory procedure that is performed during in vitro fertilization (IVF) to screen embryos for chromosomal abnormalities before they are transferred into the uterus.

PGS can identify embryos that are most likely to result in a successful pregnancy, as well as reduce the risk of miscarriage and chromosomal disorders.

During PGS, a small number of cells are removed from the embryo, which is then tested for abnormalities in the number of chromosomes. PGS can be performed using several different techniques, including fluorescence in situ hybridization (FISH), comparative genomic hybridization (CGH), and next-generation sequencing (NGS).

WHEN IS PGS PERFORMED?

PGS is performed when there is a risk of genetic disorders or chromosomal abnormalities. This risk may be due to advanced maternal age, previous miscarriages, repeated IVF failures, or a family history of genetic diseases.

PGS is typically performed on embryos at the blastocyst stage, which is about five to seven days after fertilisation.

At this stage, the embryo has about 100 cells and can be analysed without causing significant harm.

PGS is recommended for couples who are at risk of having a child with a chromosomal abnormality or who have had recurrent miscarriages or failed IVF cycles.

CANDIDATES FOR GENETIC SCREENING AND DIAGNOSIS?

PGS is recommended for couples who are at an increased risk of having a child with a chromosomal abnormality. This includes couples who have a history of chromosomal disorders, are of advanced maternal age, have had recurrent miscarriages or failed IVF cycles, or have a known genetic disorder.

PGD is recommended for couples who are carriers of a specific genetic disorder and want to avoid passing the condition on to their offspring. This includes couples who have a family history of genetic disorders or are carriers of a genetic mutation.

ADVANTAGES OF PGD AND PGS

Preimplantation genetic screening and preimplantation genetic diagnosis allow couples to identify embryos that are free of genetic abnormalities before implantation. Accordingly, this:

  • Reduces the risk of having a child with a chromosomal abnormality or genetic disorder.
  • Increases the chances of a successful pregnancy and live birth.
  • Reduces the risk of miscarriage and failed IVF cycles.
  • Provides couples with information which can help with family planning and decision-making.
  • Allows for the selection of embryos based on gender, in cases where there is a risk of passing on a gender-specific genetic disorder.

PGD FOR GENDER SELECTION IN NORTH CYPRUS

Gender selection using PGD is a controversial topic that is not legal in many countries.

However, in North Cyprus, gender selection using PGD is legal and can be performed for medical reasons such as to avoid the transmission of a gender-linked genetic disorder.

This may include couples who are carriers of X-linked genetic disorders, which affect males more than females.

The procedure is performed in a highly controlled environment and requires the use of advanced genetic technologies to ensure accuracy and safety.

SPEAK TO EXPERTS IN GENETIC DIAGNOSTICS

PGS can increase the chances of a successful pregnancy by 10-15% per transfer. PGD success rates vary depending on the specific genetic disorder being tested for but can be as high as 98% for some conditions.

If you are considering PGD or PGS, it is important to speak with a fertility specialist to determine if this technique is right for you. Many IVF clinics in North Cyprus do not offer these services.

We are proud to be one of the few reputed IVF clinics in North Cyprus to have the expertise and technology to deliver high-quality solutions for preimplantation genetics, at affordable rates.

Sago IVF Team in North Cyprus have experts in genetic diagnostics and is at the forefront of offering a range of advanced fertility treatments including PGD and PGS.
